Police Checks for Referendum Workers

Completing a Police Check is part of the employment process for Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) temporary staff. The AEC currently uses Equifax, an authorised agent of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) for the processing of these police checks via Equifax fit2work's easy to use interface.

Get started

Before you commence

Keep reading to find out how to complete the Police Check online, including what information to have on hand. It's FREE to complete.

Police Check:

  1. The ‘Get started’ button above sends you to a Equifax fit2work login page, where you will be asked to input your username and temporary password. These were sent to you in an email by Equifax fit2work.
  2. Complete your details, including alias or previous names and previous addresses for the past five years.
  3. Upload a photo of yourself in a ‘selfie format’ by holding your photo ID next to your face (see FAQs)
  4. Choose four (4) copies of identity documents to upload. If you have changed your name and your documents are in both your current and previous name, you will need to supply a copy of your change of name document issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages or Deed Poll, in addition to the four documents (see ID Requirements Guidelines).
  5. Review the information you have provided to ensure the details are correct.
  6. Provide your consent to sharing the information with Equifax fit2work and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) to conduct the Police Check. You will be asked for your electronic signature (see FAQs).
  7. Review the information you have provided to ensure the details are correct.
  8. Click ‘Submit Check’ to receive a ‘Completion’ message. In some circumstances, Equifax fit2work will reach out to you via email, SMS or phone call for additional information. This may occur in the days following your online Equifax fit2work submission.

Privacy and Security

How does Equifax fit2work use, manage and store my information?

Equifax fit2work has the highest levels of security. Security measures include:

  • Our information is collected only and specifically for a Police Check, nothing else.
  • Candidates log in to a secure online portal protected by a firewall and 24/7 security monitoring.
  • Data entered into the online portal is encrypted to maintain privacy and guard against information loss, misuse, modification or unauthorised access.

Data is collected, managed and expunged in accordance with the rules of the ACIC National Police Checking Service (NPCS) as well as Data & Privacy Regulations in Australia.

For further information, view our privacy policy and collection statement.

How does Equifax fit2work process my Police Record?

Once your ID is validated, and consent form received, your details are checked against databases held by the Australian police authority in each jurisdiction through the National Police Checking Service (NPCS), a division of ACIC. If you have a criminal record, a result report is returned to us detailing any relevant court convictions.

How long will you keep my information for?

Your application and police record data will be destroyed after 12 months as per ACIC requirements.

How does Electronic Identity Document Verification Check work?

By entering an individual's details as they appear on their documents, the Equifax fit2work platform submits queries to the relevant agencies that issued the documents via the DVS Hub. The DVS will determine if the document details are still valid, not expired or cancelled, and will return an indicator to our online portal within seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Check out our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for further details.

As soon as practical after receiving your welcome email, please log in to complete your online Police Check through Equifax fit2work. The AEC cannot confirm your employment until your check is completed.

ACIC requires you to provide four documents from 3 categories as below:

  • ONE (1) Commencement of Identity Document
  • ONE (1) Primary Use in the Community Document
  • TWO (2) Secondary Use in the Community Documents.

In all instances, the combination of identity documents must contain at minimum your full name, date of birth and a photograph.

If you have provided identity documents using a former name, such as a maiden name, you must provide evidence of the name change in addition to the four identity documents.

You can view the ID Requirements Guidelines for a detailed list of acceptable documents.

You will be asked to take a photo of yourself holding one of the photo IDs you will be uploading. The details on your photo ID will have to be clearly visible.

You can upload a pre-taken ‘selfie’. Alternatively, we can send a link to your mobile (choose ‘send link to my phone’) so that you can take a ‘selfie’ and upload it from your mobile.

Click here for a step-by-step guide on how to upload your identity documents.

You can sign by using your finger on a smartphone or tablet, or your mouse on a computer.

You can log back into the Equifax fit2work secure login portal at any time to view the status of your check. If your Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Checks result includes Disclosable Court Outcomes, you will receive an email to advise you of this.

About Police Checks

How long does it take to process a Police Check?

Accredited bodies, police agencies and the ACIC work together to deliver the Service, aiming to process 95 per cent of police checks within 10 business days, noting that:

  • Around 70 percent of checks are completed in real-time with results being returned to the organisation that requested the check within minutes.
  • Around 30 percent of checks are referred to one or more police agencies because a ‘potential match’ is found. On limited occasions, this process can take longer than 10 business days to process, due to the complexity of the check.

A ‘potential match’ may be found if the applicant shares similar details with other individuals recorded in police systems, particularly if they have a common name. Processing of a check in these instances can take longer to progress.

Additionally, the check may take longer to process if there are missing or inconsistent details within the application. If there is any lost, illegible or unclear uploaded information, Equifax fit2work will contact you to provide support.

What will a police check contain?

The check will contain any findings of guilt unless it is spent. Each state has different legislation regarding findings and amount of time which defines spent convictions. Please refer to the links below for each state:

  1. New South Wales
  2. Northern Territory
  3. Queensland
  4. South Australia
  5. Tasmania
  6. Victoria
  7. Western Australia

Troubles with your form
